Energy Rebate - How This Will Be Paid    14 April, 2022

⚠️Important Information - Energy Rebate ⚠️

Earlier this year, the government announced a one-off £150 council tax energy rebate for all households in England whose main home is in council tax bands A – D.

The council tax team is working to process the energy rebate to all eligible households as quickly as it can. To satisfy regulations we must undertake pre-payment checks to avoid fraud. We are also awaiting the software to enable us to run this scheme which we are expecting to receive at the end of April. As soon as it is received a period of intensive testing will follow and then payments will begin to be made. However, we can confirm the details of how this payment will be made:

  • If you are eligible for the rebate and you pay your council tax by direct debit (DD), we will pay £150 directly into the bank account your DD payments are taken. We anticipate this to be in May 2022. This will be done automatically, you don’t need to do anything. Timescales are subject to any additional checks that may be necessary. For example a mismatch between the name of the liable Council Tax payer and the bank account holder may require further checks and may delay the payment of the rebate.

  • If you don't pay by DD, we will be using the Post Office Payout Voucher Scheme to make your payment. The person named on the council tax account will receive a letter with a barcode that enables them to pick up your cash payment from any Post Office branch, with appropriate identification. Letters will be posted in May 2022. There is no need to apply for this or to hand over any bank account information to anyone, it will be sent automatically to all eligible households.

Some important points to clarify:

  • This scheme is not a reduction in council tax
  • The payment will not show on your council tax bill

HBBC will NEVER ask for bank account or personal details over the phone. If anyone calls, emails or texts asking for them, this is a scam and you should hang up straight away or you can report it to Action Fraud: www.actionfraud.police.uk

For those households who need help with their energy bills but are not eligible for the energy rebate – the criteria for this scheme is being finalised and will be announced in due course.

Hope you find this of assistance.
