Press release: Battling Knights Come to Hinckley for Family-Friendly Event    7 July, 2023

PRESS RELEASE

ISSUE: 7 July 2023

Battling knights Come to Hinckley for family-friendly event

A fire-breathing jester, battling knights and a gruesome barber surgeon will descend upon Hinckley for two days of medieval fun this summer.

The free, family-friendly Medieval Fair will be held by Hinckley’s High Street Heritage Action Zone in Argents Mead, running on 22 and 23 July from 10am until 5pm.

A range of fun activities will take place as part of the two-day event, including music and have-a-go dancing, an educational children’s Battle of Bosworth, a gruesome barber surgeon display by local re-enactor Eddie Smallwood, a fire-breathing jester, archaeology talks and more.

Families can also enjoy watching fearless knights in combat and take part in tented medieval crafts and displays, both led by Midlands-based group Medieval Sokeman.

Guests will also be able to watch The Crown and the Quill, a play about King Richard III run by Red River Theatre. The play tells the imaginary tale of an afterlife where Shakespeare arrives at the gates of heaven, only to be met by a guide who is revealed to be King Richard. The scene is then set for a comic and tragic debate – with fists! – about the truths of the story of the famous king.

Visitors to the event can also buy refreshments, with caterers selling hog roast, crepes and more. Families are invited to pack picnics.

The timetable for the event on both days is as follows:

10am Fair opens: music and have-a-go dancing

10.30am: Barber surgeon and children’s Battle of Bosworth

11am: The Crown and the Quill, Richard III play

11.30am: Jester and archaeology talk at Castle

Executive Member for Events at the Borough Council, Cllr Mark Bools said: “It’s great to see the Hinckley High Street Heritage Action Zone fund another event that families and visitors can come along and enjoy for free.  This promises to be a fun-filled family event, with something for everyone over the weekend. Come along and learn all about the Battle of Bosworth, watch our spectacular fire-breathing jester, enjoy an archaeology talk, or be entertained by the gruesome barber surgeon. We hope to see you there.”
